Irdeto has announced that April marks its crossing over of the three million mark in the delivery of security drivers- including surface mounted device chips (SMDs) and subscriber identity modules (SIMs)- for mobile devices that support TU Media Corp’s Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (S-DMB) service.
The Irdeto Mobile Broadcast Conditional Access (CA) solution allows TU Media, in which SK Telecom, Korea’s number one mobile communications company, is a major shareholder, to securely manage consumers’ access to its 15 video and 19 audio broadcast channels on more than 90 different devices including phones, PDAs, in-car devices and portable multimedia players.
Device manufacturers to which Irdeto provides its solutions include Samsung, LG and Motorola. The Irdeto Mobile Broadcast solution, which is tested to support at least 20 million users, is used to encrypt services for TU Media’s 1.1 million subscribers, which has grown at an average rate of 1,600 new subscribers per day since the Korean mobile broadcasting company launched its S-DMB service in May 2005. The Irdeto Mobile Broadcast CA system also supports multiple revenue modules including subscription, pre-paid, pay per time, impulse pay per view and ordered pay per view, enabling TU Media to maximize ARPU and reach out to every relevant market segment. Mr. Joo Mun Lee, director and team leader, Technology Strategy Office in SK Telecom said, “Our strategic partnership with Irdeto has provided us with a strong platform to effectively address the mobile TV opportunity.
“The reliability and scalability of Irdeto’s world’s first mobile conditional access system have enabled us to handle the tremendous growth in our subscriber base while ensuring that revenues are protected using proven content security technologies.” "The strong support from both the device manufacturers and TU Media subscribers bodes well for the future of the mobile broadcast industry,” said Mr. Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto.
“Irdeto broke new ground in this market when we launched the world’s first S-DMB content protection system for TU Media, and we will continue to work together to strengthen our lead in this space.” Besides S-DMB, Irdeto- which is headquartered near Amsterdam, Netherlands, also has deployed solutions for DVB-H operations in South Africa and Hungary, and T-DMB operations in Germany. This makes Irdeto the only content security company with deployments in all three types of networks. Irdeto also supports and complies with the security specification adopted by the FLO Forum, the interest group that supports MediaFLO. |
