Symantec Upgrades Backup Exec with New CDP, Encryption |

Data security and storage provider ,Symantec has beefed up its Backup Exec data protection software with a new version that includes new Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and encryption features and made its Ghost desktop migration software ready for Windows Vista.
"With this version, we allow IT to get back individual Exchange messages, folders and mailboxes granularly, but without mailbox backup," said Michael Parker, senior manager of product markets for Symantec. "Usually, getting to that level of granular recovery down to a single item meant you had to do a full database backup and then a bulk mailbox backup. This way there is no mailbox backup, and tracks the entire transaction log."
Backup Exec 11d comes with 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption at no charge, Parker said. "Now solution providers have the opportunity to sell into larger customer organisations where the RFP (request for proposal) requires encryption," he said. Parker added that turning the encryption adds about a 20-percent overhead to the backup process.
Symantec will commence the sale of Backup Exec 11d on November 20, while Ghost 2.0 is slated to ship November 30 with a price starting at USD 39.20 per license.
