Apple Issues Fix For MacBook Sudden Shutdowns

Apple has released a firmware update for its MacBook line that it claimed fixes the sudden shutdown problem many owners have recently reported. The problem affects a 'small percentage' of the notebook computers that Apple introduced in May, the company said in an e-mailed statement. Apple posted a firmware update on its web site and advised all MacBook owners to install the software.

Reports of the surprise shutdowns began surfacing on Mac-user web sites a few months ago. More than 1,500 users had registered with Macbookrandomshutdown.com since the site launched in August.

Apple spokeswoman Lynn Fox declined to comment beyond the statement.

The firmware update can be downloaded here; users running Mac OS X 10.4.6 or earlier must update to 10.4.8 before applying the update.
