Tumbleweed Tightens Enterprise E-Mail Security

Email has become an essential tool for business communication, but unfortunately, it relies on an infrastructure that is inherently insecure. Tumbleweed, a provider of email security, managed file transfer, and identity validation appliance and software products, unveiled its latest addition of e-mail security appliances, the MailGate Appliance 6500 designed for companies with 10,000 employees or more. With the release of the MailGate 6500, Tumbleweed, which traditionally sells to midsize businesses is making a push into the enterprise market, says Brian Burke, research manager for security products and services at IDC.

The appliance is aimed at companies looking to simplify their e-mail security strategies by consolidating to fewer products that can do more things. Based on a hardened Linux kernel, the MailGate 6500 protects corporate systems from e-mail-borne threats with features such as Virus Outbreak Protection, which uses pattern detection to identify new virus attacks even before antivirus companies release signatures.

However, Tumbleweed's pitch to enterprises that the features and capacity of the 6500 will let companies reduce their total number of e-mail security appliances should make sense to large companies. "That's something we hear every day from I.T. managers in large enterprises; they don't want to buy more appliances," Burke says.

The Tumbleweed MailGate Appliance 6500 delivers additional integrated features that include:

  • Virus Outbreak Protection providing zero hour defense against new virus attacks
  • Advanced anti-spam eliminating over 99% of unwanted mail
  • Processing power of more than one million messages per hour
  • Bi-directional content inspection with advanced and intuitive policy controls
  • Enterprise-class scalability with clustering between data centers, per-domain routing and replicated policy configuration
  • Advanced rules-based TLS encryption providing policy-based secure message delivery
  • Multi-language support for end-user spam management controls

"Organizations are increasingly moving towards consolidating on fewer products that provide more comprehensive security," said Brian Burke, Research Manager for IDC. "A challenge facing today’s enterprise-class organizations is finding an appliance that provides high performance, scalability and reduces the cost of ownership. Vendors that can effectively address the changing security needs of today’s enterprise organizations will be best positioned to lead the market."

"The MailGate Appliance 6500 is the culmination of our years of enterprise security experience blended with a state-of-the-art platform that provides the highest possible power, flexibility, and manageability," said James Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Products for Tumbleweed .The MailGate 6500 is priced starting at USD 18,500; the related MailGate software is priced starting at USD 5,000 for 250 users.
